At the same time, Rwanda (+36.9%) and Ghana (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mattocks and rakes supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 4.5% share.

In South Africa, mattocks and rakes exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kenya (-17.7% per year) and Rwanda (+27.5% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 25%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, imports of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes in Africa soared to X tons, picking up by 15% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.6% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mattocks and rakes imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 33%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Mozambique was the largest importer of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 31% of total imports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Tanzania (11%), Uganda (8.6%) and Rwanda (5.6%). Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes imports, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+19.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.7%), Burundi (+16.4%), Ghana (+8.3%), Nigeria (+7.0%), Kenya (+3.5%), Rwanda (+3.4%), Angola (+3.4%) and Uganda (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Mozambique (+24 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8 p.p.) and Burundi (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Uganda (-3.3 p.p.), Kenya (-3.8 p.p.) and Tanzania (-9.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes in Africa, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.4% share.

In Mozambique, mattocks and rakes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+4.6% per year) and Tanzania (-3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -12.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
