As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of mattress supports increased by 11% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mattress support imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 7%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Botswana (X units) represented the largest importer of mattress supports, creating 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), constituting a 5.1% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Togo (X units), Ghana (X units), South Africa (X units), Namibia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Morocco (X units), Tanzania (X units), Angola (X units) and Guinea (X units) - together made up 30% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mattress support imports into Botswana stood at +9.9%. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana, Senegal, Togo, Burkina Faso and Morocco increased by +23, +4.2, +2.9, +2.8 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mattress supports in Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 5.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 4.6% share.

In Botswana, mattress support imports declined by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-3.5% per year) and Ghana (+6.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -7.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
