Market Size for Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Africa

The African market for meat of camels and other animals reached $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Africa

In value terms, camel and other animal meat production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), with a combined 30% share of total production. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Somalia, Morocco, South Africa, Congo and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +1.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of meat of camels and other animals in Africa reached X kg per head, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 5.9% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in Africa reached X heads, approximately mirroring 2021. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 1.4% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, producing animals failed to regain momentum.

Camel and other animal meat exports reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -67.1% compared with 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 60% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (14%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.2%). The following exporters - Swaziland (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - each reached a 3.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat exports from South Africa stood at -19.9%. At the same time, Swaziland (+18.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.7%) and Tanzania (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-24.4%) and Egypt (-33.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+13 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.1 p.p.), South Africa (+4.5 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-9.1 p.p.) and Namibia (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Namibia, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, camel and other animal meat exports plunged by an average annual rate of -16.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+12.4% per year) and Namibia (-26.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -26.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

Camel and other animal meat imports dropped notably to X tons in 2022, declining by -33% against the previous year. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 41% of total imports. Gabon (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (8.8%), Djibouti (8.1%), Tanzania (5.6%), Zambia (5%) and Ghana (4.5%).

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals imports, with a CAGR of +137.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+58.8%), Mali (+46.1%), Djibouti (+26.5%), Ghana (+17.4%), Gabon (+12.5%) and Zambia (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Morocco (+41 p.p.), Gabon (+9.8 p.p.), Mali (+8.7 p.p.), Djibouti (+7.9 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.6 p.p.), Zambia (+4.3 p.p.) and Ghana (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Djibouti, with a 13% share.

In Morocco, camel and other animal meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +94.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mali (+60.1% per year) and Djibouti (+32.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -24.7% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
