In 2021, the amount of mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders imported in Africa reduced to X units, with a decrease of -3% on 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mechanical shovel and excavator imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the major importer of mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was near 29% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X units), making up a 5.1% share of total imports. Morocco (X units), Ghana (X units), Nigeria (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Namibia (X units), Botswana (X units), Sudan (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Tanzania (X units), Guinea (X units) and Angola (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+14.3%), Namibia (+13.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.6%), Botswana (+4.9%), Tanzania (+2.9%), Nigeria (+2.6%) and Sudan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. Egypt and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-6.2%) and Angola (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8 p.p.), Namibia (+2.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and Ghana saw its share reduced by -3% and -3.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mechanical shovels, excavators and shovel loaders in Africa, comprising 21% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-1.5% per year) and Nigeria (-1.6% per year).
