In 2022, imports of mechanical wood pulp in Africa reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -5.3% against the year before. Overall, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mechanical wood pulp imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the largest importer of mechanical wood pulp in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Ghana (5.2%). The following importers - Tunisia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total imports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mechanical wood pulp imports, with a CAGR of +61.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+46.5%) and Ghana (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Tunisia (-5.1%) and Egypt (-29.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+72 p.p.), Ghana (+4.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+1.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -81.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mechanical wood pulp in Africa, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +58.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-32.0% per year) and Ghana (+5.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Zimbabwe ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) and Tunisia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
