The African medical steriliser market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, medical steriliser exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporter of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Sudan (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Kenya (5.9%). Ethiopia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sudan (+42.4%), Ethiopia (+35.6%) and Kenya (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sudan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2022. Sudan (+17 p.p.), South Africa (+6.9 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest medical steriliser supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sudan ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +3.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sudan (+40.6% per year) and Kenya (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 27%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Sudan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X units of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers were imported in Africa; surging by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, medical steriliser imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Morocco (X units) and Algeria (X units) represented roughly 32% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.6% share, followed by Egypt (8.2%), Libya (7.7%), Tanzania (4.9%), Ghana (4.8%) and Ethiopia (4.7%). South Africa (X units), Tunisia (X units), Angola (X units), Kenya (X units) and Cameroon (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +25.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest medical steriliser importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 44% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Tunisia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon and Angola, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 7.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
