Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together committing a 15% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to medicaments containing penicillin exports from South Africa stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Ethiopia (+93.1%) and Algeria (+29.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-32.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In terms of the main exporting countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +93.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof increased by 8.4% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, medicaments containing penicillin imports contracted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Sudan represented the key importer of medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together making up a 24% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Libya (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Sudan decreased at an average annual rate of -7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+66.8%), Tunisia (+51.5%), Morocco (+42.1%), Nigeria (+33.1%) and Libya (+29.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (+18 p.p.), Nigeria (+6 p.p.), Tunisia (+3.7 p.p.), Morocco (+3.3 p.p.) and Libya (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sudan saw its share reduced by -31.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sudan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported medicaments containing penicillins or derivatives thereof in Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.2% share.
In Sudan, medicaments containing penicillin imports declined by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (+76.5% per year) and Morocco (+54.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -13.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+17.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
