Mercury Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African mercury market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption posted a slight expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mercury production reduced remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Mercury exports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 853% on 2020. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 3,849%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mercury exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a remarkable increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the major exporter of mercuries in Africa, mixing up 100% of total export.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mercuries exports, with a CAGR of +878.4% from 2012 to 2021. Nigeria (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest mercury supplier in Africa.

In Nigeria, mercury exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4,266.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 94%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Nigeria amounted to +346.6% per year.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of mercuries increased by 138% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a temperate expansion. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Togo (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 76% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together making up an 18% share of total imports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mercuries in Africa, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 17% share.

In South Africa, mercury imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+9.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (+30.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 61%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
