Metallised Yarn Market Size in Africa
The African metallised yarn market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, dropping by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Metallised Yarn Production in Africa
In value terms, metallised yarn production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Metallised Yarn Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of metallised yarn and strip exported in Africa fell rapidly to X tons, declining by -16.7% on 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 265% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, metallised yarn exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zambia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X kg) took a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (7%) and South Africa (5.7%). Morocco (X kg), Kenya (X kg) and Egypt (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metallised yarn exports from Zambia stood at +10.8%. At the same time, Morocco (+29.2%), Mauritius (+20.0%) and Kenya (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.2% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-10.9%) and Tunisia (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zambia (+40 p.p.), Mauritius (+5.8 p.p.) and Morocco (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-7.8 p.p.) and Tunisia (-39.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest metallised yarn supplying countries in Africa were Zambia ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Mauritius ($X), together accounting for 75% of total exports. Morocco, Egypt, South Africa and Kenya lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +26.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Metallised Yarn Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of metallised yarn and strip decreased by -14.3% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 104%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metallised yarn imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of metallised yarn imports in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together resulting at 90% of total import. Nigeria (X tons) and Libya (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest metallised yarn importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +23.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 71% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
