The African mica market shrank notably to $X in 2021, which is down by -56.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Madagascar represented the main exporter of mica in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mica exports from Madagascar stood at +16.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+42.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Madagascar totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+3.0%).

Mica Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of mica were imported in Africa; shrinking by -20.9% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, mica imports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 91%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented roughly 56% of total imports in 2021. Niger (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.8% share, followed by Tunisia (6.5%), Nigeria (5.9%), Mozambique (5.5%) and South Africa (5.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mica importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Nigeria ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. Tanzania, Mozambique, Niger and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +28.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 72% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
