Microphone Market Size in Africa

The African microphone market rose modestly to $X in 2022, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +90.7% against 2012 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, microphone production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of microphones and their stands decreased by -2.9% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 148% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, microphone exports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), making up an 18% share of total exports. Cameroon (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Rwanda was also the fastest-growing in terms of the microphones and their stands exports, with a CAGR of +39.3% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (-12.0%) and Cameroon (-13.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Rwanda (+71 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cameroon (-5.7 p.p.) and South Africa (-50.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest microphone supplier in Africa, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Rwanda ($X), with a 9.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, microphone exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+20.7% per year) and Cameroon (-11.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of microphones and their stands decreased by -7.3% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, microphone imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ethiopia (X units), distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Ghana (X units), Angola (X units) and Rwanda (X units) represented the main importers of microphones and their stands, together comprising 56% of total imports. Kenya (X units), South Africa (X units), Morocco (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Algeria (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Senegal (X units) and Libya (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Ethiopia increased at an average annual rate of +15.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+30.1%), Senegal (+17.7%), Rwanda (+16.2%), Kenya (+10.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.9%), Libya (+2.0%), Ghana (+1.5%) and South Africa (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. Zimbabwe and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-9.3%) and Angola (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya and Senegal increased by +17, +9.4, +3.5, +1.9 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported microphones and their stands in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 9.2% share.

In South Africa, microphone imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+11.7% per year) and Ethiopia (+19.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
