Market Size for Mineral or Aerated Waters in Africa
The African mineral or aerated water market shrank to $X in 2022, falling by -2.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +2.4% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Production of Mineral or Aerated Waters in Africa
In value terms, mineral or aerated water production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports of Mineral or Aerated Waters
Exports in Africa
In 2022, after four years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of mineral or aerated waters, when their volume increased by 4.8% to X litres. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporter of mineral or aerated waters in Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X litres, which was approx. 42% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X litres), Uganda (X litres), Ghana (X litres), Burkina Faso (X litres) and Morocco (X litres), together generating a 41% share of total exports. Mali (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mineral or aerated water exports from South Africa stood at -7.5%. At the same time, Ghana (+44.6%), Mali (+30.0%), Egypt (+28.0%), Burkina Faso (+8.5%) and Morocco (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +44.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uganda (-13.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Egypt, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Mali increased by +13, +6.8, +4.6, +3.5 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mineral or aerated water supplier in Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+28.9% per year) and Morocco (+20.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mineral or aerated water export price decreased by -17.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 69%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per litre), while Ghana ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Mineral or Aerated Waters
Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of mineral or aerated waters imported in Africa amounted to X litres, with an increase of 2.9% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports stood at $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Morocco (X litres), distantly followed by Guinea-Bissau (X litres), Libya (X litres), Namibia (X litres) and Togo (X litres) represented the main importers of mineral or aerated waters, together committing 50% of total imports. The following importers - Equatorial Guinea (X litres), South Africa (X litres), Cote d'Ivoire (X litres), Niger (X litres), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Cabo Verde (X litres), Djibouti (X litres) and Senegal (X litres) - together made up 25% of total imports.
Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mineral or aerated waters imports, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+27.9%), Niger (+12.9%), Namibia (+12.7%), Guinea-Bissau (+11.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.8%), South Africa (+5.4%) and Libya (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Djibouti (-2.1%), Equatorial Guinea (-2.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.4%), Senegal (-4.6%) and Cabo Verde (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Togo, Guinea-Bissau, Namibia, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +20, +5.5, +5.3, +4.5, +2.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Libya ($X) and Namibia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 35% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Morocco, with a CAGR of +23.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per litre in 2022, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per litre), while Togo ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
