The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 2.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -3.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (-1.1% per year) and Zambia (+19.0% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 1,253% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+11.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

By contrast, Morocco (-9.0%) and South Africa (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Algeria and Egypt increased by +13 and +11 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Algeria ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 34% share of total imports. South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Guinea, Senegal and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, surging by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
