Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers exported in Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, waning by -41.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, NPK fertilizer exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. Exports by Country

Morocco prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 72% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) held a 7.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (6.9%). South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers exports, with a CAGR of +106.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+51.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+14.6%), Kenya (+12.5%) and Senegal (+11.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mali (-3.3%) and South Africa (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+72 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mali (-27.1 p.p.) and South Africa (-38.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest NPK fertilizer supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 5.5% share.

In Morocco, NPK fertilizer exports expanded at an average annual rate of +94.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-6.1% per year) and Senegal (+19.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

NPK fertilizer imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 20% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons), Benin (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) was the key importer of mixed nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizers in Africa, creating 65% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons), Togo (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +143.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Benin ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 34% of total imports. Malawi, Algeria, Zambia, Ghana, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +135.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
