The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, mixes and doughs exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +105.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), generating a 9.4% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+47.0%), Egypt (+13.4%) and Swaziland (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +47.0% from 2012-2022. While the share of Egypt (+5.3 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mixes and doughs supplier in Africa, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +5.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+14.2% per year) and Swaziland (+6.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of mixes and doughs decreased by -5.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, mixes and doughs imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) were the main importers of mixes and doughs, together achieving 60% of total imports. Morocco (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +36.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Botswana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 38% of total imports. Morocco, Algeria, Namibia, Libya, Zambia, Angola, Swaziland, Kenya, Tunisia and Lesotho lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Among the main importing countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +32.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Libya (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
