In 2022, exports of molasses in Africa reduced dramatically to X tons, waning by -81.3% on 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 292% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, molasse exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented the main exporters of molasses in 2022, finishing at near 33% and 23% of total exports, respectively. Sudan (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Zambia (10%) and Tanzania (6.2%). The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +42.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest molasse supplier in Africa, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 11% share.

In Egypt, molasse exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+4.1% per year) and Mozambique (+12.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of molasses increased by 11% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, molasse imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) represented roughly 42% of total imports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Malawi (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Botswana (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons) - each reached a 7.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Djibouti (with a CAGR of +54.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Namibia, Malawi, Uganda, Botswana and Djibouti lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Among the main importing countries, Djibouti, with a CAGR of +37.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 22%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
