In 2022, exports of molasses (excluding cane molasses) in Africa reduced remarkably to X tons, which is down by -56.1% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 94%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Egypt prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kenya (+41.0%), Zambia (+16.3%) and South Africa (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +41.0% from 2012-2022. Kenya (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest non-cane molasses supplier in Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +3.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+5.1% per year) and Kenya (+13.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of molasses (excluding cane molasses), when their volume decreased by -18.7% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 89%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cane molasses imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Tunisia represented the key importer of molasses (excluding cane molasses) in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (16%). Botswana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Tunisia decreased at an average annual rate of -5.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+75.7%) and Namibia (+23.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +75.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Botswana (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+16 p.p.) and Namibia (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Botswana and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -28.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molasses (excluding cane molasses) in Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.3% share.

In Tunisia, non-cane molasses imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+14.7% per year) and Tanzania (+62.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
