In 2021, purchases abroad of monophenols decreased by -30.1% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, monophenols imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the major importers of monophenols in 2021, reaching near 23% and 22% of total imports, respectively. Algeria (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by South Africa (8.9%), Senegal (8.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (6%). The following importers - Libya (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - together made up 8.7% of total imports.

In value terms, the largest monophenols importing markets in Africa were Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 47% of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +20.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
