Motor Boat Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African motor boat market decreased by -9.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor boat production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X units of motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports were exported in Africa; growing by 244% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, motor boat exports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +15.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Seychelles (X units) and South Africa (X units) prevails in exports structure, together generating 78% of total exports. Namibia (X units) held an 8.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (8.4%). Botswana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +44.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest motor boat supplier in Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Seychelles ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +31.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Seychelles (+44.5% per year) and Kenya (+46.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -69.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 201% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports decreased by -28.8% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor boat imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 294% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Seychelles (X units) represented the key importer of motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports, committing 54% of total imports. Egypt (X units) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (8.1%). Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Somalia (X units) and Cameroon (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Seychelles was also the fastest-growing in terms of the motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports imports, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Somalia (+18.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+16.1%), Tanzania (+14.5%), Egypt (+5.7%) and Cameroon (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Seychelles (+43 p.p.), Tanzania (+4 p.p.) and Somalia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Seychelles ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported motor boats and motor yachts, for pleasure or sports in Africa, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 1.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 0.8% share.

In Seychelles, motor boat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-1.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+18.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 128%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Seychelles ($X per unit), while Cameroon ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
