The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 135%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 245%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa was the largest exporter of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Algeria (6.1%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+21.6%) and Tunisia (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest motor vehicle engine supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In South Africa, motor vehicle engine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+2.2% per year) and Algeria (+22.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, motor vehicle engine export price decreased by -11.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 47%. Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) in Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, falling by -18% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -41.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -31.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 60% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) took an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (8.6%) and Algeria (4.9%). The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +32.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 87% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, which together accounted for a further 7.2%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Algeria, with a CAGR of +31.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
