Rubber-to-metal and moulded article exports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 7.2% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 7.8%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rubber-to-metal and moulded article exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), comprising a 28% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of rubber-to-metal and moulded articles. At the same time, Tanzania (+66.2%) and Kenya (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +66.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-16.7%) and Morocco (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+37 p.p.) and Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-3.6 p.p.) and Morocco (-38.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest rubber-to-metal and moulded article supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 29% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 6.1% share.
In South Africa, rubber-to-metal and moulded article exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-20.3% per year) and Tunisia (-15.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of rubber-to-metal and moulded articles in Africa reached X tons, increasing by 10% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rubber-to-metal and moulded article imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Morocco (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main importers of rubber-to-metal and moulded articles in 2021, amounting to near 23% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Ghana (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.6% share, followed by Algeria (5.7%), Tunisia (5.5%) and Egypt (4.5%). Kenya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rubber-to-metal and moulded article importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 57% of total imports. Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Libya and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
Among the main importing countries, Sudan, with a CAGR of +26.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
