In value terms, mounted objective lens exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 125% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X units) held a 6.1% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (5.6%). The following exporters - Egypt (X units), Congo (X units) and Angola (X units) - together made up 9.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mounted objective lens exports from South Africa stood at -10.3%. At the same time, Egypt (+58.3%), Tunisia (+41.2%), Congo (+34.6%), Madagascar (+29.5%) and Angola (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.3% from 2012-2022. Tunisia (+6 p.p.), Madagascar (+5.4 p.p.), Egypt (+3.9 p.p.) and Congo (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -23.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mounted objective lens supplier in Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Congo ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 6.1% share.
In South Africa, mounted objective lens exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Congo (+31.3% per year) and Egypt (+59.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 200% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Congo ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of mounted objective lenses increased by 10% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mounted objective lens imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), creating a 5.4% share of total imports. Morocco (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+22.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.9% from 2012-2022. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +5.1 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mounted objective lenses in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+41.0% per year) and Morocco (+2.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mounted objective lens import price increased by +46.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
