Memories Market Size in Africa

After three years of decline, the African memories market increased by 12% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Memories Production in Africa

In value terms, memories production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of multichip integrated circuits: memories were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 9,464%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, memories exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ethiopia (X units) was the key exporter of multichip integrated circuits: memories, achieving 56% of total exports. Tunisia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Egypt (X units). All these countries together took near 37% share of total exports. The following exporters - Somalia (X units) and Nigeria (X units) - each resulted at a 3.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +114.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest memories supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Somalia, with a 3.5% share.

In Tunisia, memories exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+16.5% per year) and Somalia (+98.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -53.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 45,187%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Ethiopia (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of multichip integrated circuits: memories increased by 105% to X units in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, memories imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tunisia (X units) was the largest importer of multichip integrated circuits: memories, creating 61% of total imports. South Africa (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Egypt (11%) and Algeria (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to memories imports into Tunisia stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Egypt (+96.1%) and Algeria (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +96.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria increased by +31, +11 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported multichip integrated circuits: memories in Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 20% share.

In Tunisia, memories imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.4% per year) and Egypt (+39.6% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
