In 2022, the African mushroom and truffle market increased by 1.6% to $X, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a prominent expansion. Mushroom And Truffle Exports

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of mushrooms and truffles exported in Africa fell sharply to X tons, waning by -24.3% against 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Libya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mushroom and truffle exports from South Africa stood at -5.4%. At the same time, Rwanda (+107.5%), Tanzania (+22.4%), Libya (+20.4%), Malawi (+15.1%) and Morocco (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +107.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zambia (-3.0%), Tunisia (-19.8%) and Algeria (-27.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+16 p.p.), Tanzania (+4 p.p.), Rwanda (+2.8 p.p.), Malawi (+2.8 p.p.) and Libya (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia and Algeria saw its share reduced by -9.6% and -22.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest mushroom and truffle supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 5.8% share.

In South Africa, mushroom and truffle exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (-21.3% per year) and Morocco (+12.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of mushrooms and truffles imported in Africa declined markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -21.3% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 48% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Nigeria (6.1%) and Mauritius (5.5%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mushroom and truffle imports into Morocco stood at +22.4%. At the same time, Mauritania (+83.8%), Kenya (+12.1%), Nigeria (+9.2%), Mozambique (+7.3%) and Mauritius (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +83.8% from 2012-2022. Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-1.4%), Botswana (-3.2%), Swaziland (-5.1%) and Namibia (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Nigeria and Mauritania increased by +39, +2.4 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mushrooms and truffles in Africa, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco stood at +22.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+3.5% per year) and Botswana (+0.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
