The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 490%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried mushroom exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 459%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 48% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Benin (9.5%), Niger (6.1%), Madagascar (5.9%) and Kenya (5.6%). Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+93.9%), Madagascar (+44.8%), Benin (+30.1%), Tanzania (+27.5%) and Kenya (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+13 p.p.), Benin (+9.2 p.p.), Niger (+6.1 p.p.), Madagascar (+5.8 p.p.) and Kenya (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-10.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-12.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest dried mushroom supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +9.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+30.0% per year) and Kenya (+6.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +90.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The countries with the highest levels of dried mushroom imports in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons), together reaching 64% of total import. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), committing a 5.8% share of total imports.
