South Africa was the main exporter of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 42% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Benin (X tons), together achieving a 42% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) - each recorded a 5.6% share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts. At the same time, Angola (+55.0%), Kenya (+32.7%), Tanzania (+19.9%), Uganda (+18.3%) and Benin (+13.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest nail and bolt supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+6.6% per year) and Kenya (+27.4% per year).

Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nail and bolt imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Tunisia, Ghana, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +19.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
