The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, narrow woven fabric exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of narrow woven fabrics in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Botswana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+21.3%), Egypt (+9.7%) and Tunisia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Botswana (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Morocco increased by +21 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 77% of total exports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +18.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Narrow woven fabric imports surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -31.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 54%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of narrow woven fabric imports in 2021 were Morocco (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together recording 43% of total import. Ethiopia (X tons) held a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (4.6%). Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Lesotho (with a CAGR of +22.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest narrow woven fabric importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X), together comprising 61% of total imports. Madagascar, South Africa, Kenya, Algeria, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Among the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
