In general, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, natural cork exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 175% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Morocco (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented roughly 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 5.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Algeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 86% of total exports. These countries were followed by Egypt, which accounted for a further 8.5%.
Egypt, with a CAGR of +21.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Natural cork imports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 7.4% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, natural cork imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 76%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.9% share, followed by Congo (7.7%). The following importers - Botswana (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) - together made up 9.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of +75.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kenya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported natural cork debacked or roughly squared in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Congo, with a 5.1% share.
In Kenya, natural cork imports increased at an average annual rate of +71.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-3.8% per year) and Congo (+22.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 61%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
