In 2021, exports of natural calcium and aluminium phosphates in Africa fell sharply to X tons, which is down by -25.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, natural calcium and aluminium phosphates exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Morocco (X tons) was the largest exporter of natural calcium and aluminium phosphates, achieving 69% of total exports. Togo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Egypt (8.7%) and Algeria (7%). Senegal (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
Exports from Morocco decreased at an average annual rate of -2.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+9.1%) and Togo (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-6.0%) and Algeria (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+4.8 p.p.) and Senegal (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Algeria and Egypt saw its share reduced by -3% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest natural calcium and aluminium phosphates supplier in Africa, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Morocco totaled -8.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-1.4% per year) and Egypt (-4.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Natural Calcium And Aluminium Phosphates
Imports in Africa
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of natural calcium and aluminium phosphates decreased by -96.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 29,550%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined notably in the following year.
In value terms, natural calcium and aluminium phosphates imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 161%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Tunisia prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total imports in 2021. Mali (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the natural calcium and aluminium phosphates imports, with a CAGR of +317.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+26.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia increased by +93 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported natural calcium and aluminium phosphates in Africa, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports.
In Tunisia, natural calcium and aluminium phosphates imports expanded at an average annual rate of +199.3% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4,407% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Tunisia amounted to $X per ton.
