The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of needles, catheters, cannulae decreased by -8.8% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae exports contracted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +98.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Tunisia represented the key exporter of needles, catheters, cannulae in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. Morocco (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (6.3%). Egypt (X units) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Tunisia increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+15.2%) and South Africa (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+5.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -8.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest needles, catheters, cannulae supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.
In Tunisia, needles, catheters, cannulae exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+16.3% per year) and South Africa (+8.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
After four years of growth, overseas purchases of needles, catheters, cannulae decreased by -11.4% to X units in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, needles, catheters, cannulae imports fell to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -11.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Morocco (X units), Tunisia (X units), South Africa (X units), Egypt (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented roughly 59% of total imports in 2021. Algeria (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Libya (X units). All these countries together took approx. 9.3% share of total imports. Kenya (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Ghana (X units), Sudan (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported needles, catheters, cannulae in Africa, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 10% share.
In South Africa, needles, catheters, cannulae imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+6.4% per year) and Morocco (+6.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 5.2%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
