Newsprint Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African newsprint market increased by 6.6% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. Kenya (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 46% against the previous year. Export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +151.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of newsprint increased by 1.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 9.8%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of newsprint, namely Egypt, South Africa and Algeria, represented more than third of total import. Kenya (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +10.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 50% of total imports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +12.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
