The African newspaper market declined to $X in 2022, reducing by -1.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 5.8%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, newspaper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the newspapers, journals and periodicals exports, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. Egypt (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +17 percentage points.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest newspaper supplier in Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
In South Africa, newspaper exports decreased by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 38%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while South Africa totaled less than $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+32.7%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of newspapers, journals and periodicals was finally on the rise to reach X units after nine years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, newspaper imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of newspaper imports in 2022 were South Africa (X units), Niger (X units), Tunisia (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Ghana (X units), Morocco (X units), Mozambique (X units), Gambia (X units), Namibia (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units) and Zambia (X units), together recording 64% of total import. Malawi (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Niger (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Mozambique, Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Gambia, Ethiopia, Niger, Malawi and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -10.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Niger (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
