Nitrites Market Size in Africa

The African nitrites market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 240% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nitrites production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,757%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of nitrites exported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 25% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 248% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, nitrites exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of nitrites, achieving 55% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (15%) and Nigeria (6.4%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nitrites exports from South Africa stood at -5.6%. At the same time, Tanzania (+20.8%), Ghana (+15.3%) and Egypt (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2021. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria increased by +16, +11 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest nitrites supplier in Africa, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, nitrites exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+32.7% per year) and Ghana (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 88% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of nitrites imported in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, surging by 324% on the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nitrites imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 69% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (8.4%). The following importers - Zambia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nitrites imports, with a CAGR of +52.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+4.8%) and Egypt (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +65 percentage points.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nitrites in Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +60.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-1.6% per year) and Egypt (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -22.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, nitrites import price increased by +99.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Zambia ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
