Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -26.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 58%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 5.4% share of total exports. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+6.2%) and Togo (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Egypt (+3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polypropylene film supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports.

In Egypt, non-cellular polypropylene film exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+4.1% per year) and Togo (+1.2% per year).

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 18%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In value terms, the largest non-cellular polypropylene film importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Algeria ($X), together comprising 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Sudan, Tunisia, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Libya, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 41%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
