Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +57.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -3.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 89%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the largest exporter of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon in Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), mixing up a 27% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+51.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012-2022. In Tunisia, graphite non-electrical articles exports expanded at an average annual rate of +56.4% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, graphite non-electrical articles export price decreased by -11.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of non-electrical articles of graphite or other carbon decreased by -1.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite non-electrical articles imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented roughly 88% of total imports in 2022. Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +23.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
