Non-Medical X-Ray Market Size in Africa
The African non-medical x-ray market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 18% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -31.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 92%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of non-medical x-rays exported in Africa rose slightly to X tons, picking up by 2.6% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), achieving an 11% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-medical x-ray exports from South Africa stood at -13.2%. At the same time, Senegal (+74.6%), Tunisia (+49.7%), Rwanda (+42.0%), Malawi (+13.5%) and Morocco (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +74.6% from 2012-2021. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Tunisia (+11 p.p.), Senegal (+3.9 p.p.), Rwanda (+2.7 p.p.), Morocco (+2.4 p.p.), Malawi (+1.8 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-21.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-medical x-ray supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 2.2% share.
In South Africa, non-medical x-ray exports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+51.3% per year) and Morocco (+9.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 96% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, non-medical x-ray imports in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 19% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -23.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -23.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 48%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of non-medical x-rays, namely Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, represented more than third of total import. Morocco (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Libya (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 9.8% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Kenya ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 37% of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Mozambique, Algeria, Tunisia, Guinea, Morocco, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya and Cabo Verde, which together accounted for a further 43%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +40.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
