In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total exports. Morocco and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.6%.

Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +27.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -10.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, air conditioning machine export price increased by +230.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 172%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Ethiopia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, air conditioning machine imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -13.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
