Tunisia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 74% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (6.7%). Mali (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-woven glass fibre webs, felts, mattresses and boards exports, with a CAGR of +52.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+49.0%) and South Africa (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest non-woven glass fibre articles supplier in Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tunisia amounted to +33.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+2.6% per year) and Egypt (-7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of non-woven glass fibre webs, felts, mattresses and boards, when their volume increased by 8.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-woven glass fibre articles imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Libya (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +40.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 46% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Sudan and Cameroon, which together accounted for a further 38%.

Sudan, with a CAGR of +45.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
