The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 275% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zambia dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together generating a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Namibia (X kg) and Swaziland (X kg) - each recorded a 4.4% share of total exports.
Exports from Zambia increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+53.6%) and Namibia (+7.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +53.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-22.8%) and South Africa (-29.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zambia, Namibia and Swaziland increased by +61, +2.1 and +2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Zambia ($X) remains the largest numerically controlled drilling machine supplier in Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 16% share.
In Zambia, numerically controlled drilling machine exports contracted by an average annual rate of -15.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-27.5% per year) and Swaziland (+52.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of numerically controlled drilling machines for working metal, when their volume decreased by -55% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 338% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, numerically controlled drilling machine imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X tons) took a 7.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (4.5%). Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the numerically controlled drilling machines for working metal imports, with a CAGR of +80.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+49.0%) and Tanzania (+22.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-2.4%), Morocco (-5.6%) and Algeria (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Tanzania and Egypt increased by +71, +5.3 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported numerically controlled drilling machines for working metal in Africa, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9.7% share.
In Nigeria, numerically controlled drilling machine imports increased at an average annual rate of +62.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+40.2% per year) and Ghana (+4.4% per year).
