The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +66.0% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of nuts (prepared or preserved) decreased by -6.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 68%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the main exporter of nuts (prepared or preserved) in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 50% of total exports in 2021. Swaziland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Egypt (12%) and Morocco (6.8%). The following exporters - Ethiopia (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each finished at a 3.6% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +18.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+32.7%), Swaziland (+24.9%), Ethiopia (+14.4%) and Morocco (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+33 p.p.), Swaziland (+14 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -44.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Morocco ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 74% of total exports. These countries were followed by Swaziland, Mozambique and Ethiopia, which together accounted for a further 14%.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +42.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, the amount of nuts (prepared or preserved) imported in Africa stood at X tons, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +66.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, nuts (prepared or preserved) imports declined to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest importer of nuts (prepared or preserved), constituting 43% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Tunisia (8.5%), Libya (6.6%) and Egypt (4.9%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +24.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+37.8%), Somalia (+32.9%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+19.1%), Morocco (+19.0%), Nigeria (+17.1%) and Egypt (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. Tunisia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-5.2%) and Algeria (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Morocco and Ethiopia increased by +33, +8.3 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest nuts (prepared or preserved) importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Libya ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Egypt, Algeria, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +52.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
