O-Xylene Market Size in Africa

The African o-xylene market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, o-xylene production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a strong increase. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of o-xylene, when their volume decreased by -34.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 239% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, o-xylene exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 154%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), generating a 4.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) - each recorded a 6.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to o-xylene exports from South Africa stood at +13.3%. At the same time, Tunisia (+14.1%) and Kenya (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tunisia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +14.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+40 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -10.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest o-xylene supplier in Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 4.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +8.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-7.8% per year) and Tunisia (+11.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Kenya ($X per ton) and Tunisia ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, o-xylene imports in Africa shrank markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -29.3% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, o-xylene imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by +17 and +2.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
