Office Supply Market Size in Africa

The African office supply market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, office supply production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Office supply exports shrank modestly to X tons in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -20.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, office supply exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +21.3% against 2019 indices. Tunisia was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 56% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by South Africa (18%).

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the office or school supplies of plastics exports, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+2.2%) and Egypt (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tunisia (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa and Egypt saw its share reduced by -9.5% and -16.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of office or school supplies of plastics imported in Africa declined modestly to X tons, with a decrease of -4.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, office supply imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Egypt (X tons), Togo (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +10.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 29% of total imports. Egypt, Libya, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Zambia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
