Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oils from coal tar exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), Angola (X tons), Gabon (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together finishing at 95% of total export. Morocco (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +56.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), South Africa ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 64% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +41.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt slump. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oils from coal tar imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Gambia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Togo (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Sao Tome and Principe (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented roughly 78% of total imports in 2021. Libya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +65.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sao Tome and Principe ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Togo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 43% of total imports. Guinea, Egypt, Gambia, South Africa, Libya, Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +45.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 25% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sao Tome and Principe ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
