In 2021, after nine years of growth, there was decline in the African preserved olive market, when its value decreased by -0.9% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, preserved olive production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27%. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of olives prepared or preserved, when their volume increased by 11% to X tons. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 46%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved olive exports amounted to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Morocco represented the main exporter of olives prepared or preserved in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved olive exports from Morocco stood at +5.3%. At the same time, Egypt (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Egypt (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Morocco (-4.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Africa

Preserved olive imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 48% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted measured growth. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Algeria (X tons) and Libya (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together generating a 9.5% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported olives prepared or preserved in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 7.7% share.

In Libya, preserved olive imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (-4.2% per year) and South Africa (+2.7% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
