Onion And Shallot Market Size in Africa
The African onion and shallot market reached $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.9% against 2020 indices. Onion And Shallot Production in Africa
In value terms, onion and shallot production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), together accounting for 44% of total production. Nigeria, Niger, Morocco, Mali, South Africa, Tunisia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Uganda and Cameroon lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the average onion and shallot yield in Africa shrank modestly to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the onion and shallot yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The onion and shallot harvested area fell slightly to X ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion and shallot production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of onions and shallots increased by 13% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Egypt was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 49% of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Sudan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ethiopia (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot exports from Egypt stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Morocco (+24.6%), Sudan (+14.5%), Ethiopia (+4.2%), South Africa (+2.2%) and Niger (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +24.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-3.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+7.6 p.p.) and Sudan (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-1.6 p.p.) and Egypt (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 6.8% share.
In Egypt, onion and shallot exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+0.2% per year) and Morocco (+14.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Africa
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of onions and shallots decreased by -4.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) represented the main importers of onions and shallots, together achieving 71% of total imports. Sierra Leone (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Congo (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Guinea ($X) and Mauritania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 43% of total imports. Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Congo, Liberia, Ethiopia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +31.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
