Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. In 2021, ophthalmic instruments exports in Africa soared to X tons, jumping by 33% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, ophthalmic instruments exports surged to $X in 2021. In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 27%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+5.8%).

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of ophthalmic instruments and appliances imported in Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 25% against 2020. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ophthalmic instruments imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the major importers of ophthalmic instruments and appliances, together committing 65% of total imports. Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+71.0%), Namibia (+37.8%), Cameroon (+26.3%), Tanzania (+23.5%), Kenya (+20.4%), Ethiopia (+17.7%), Algeria (+7.1%), Rwanda (+6.4%) and Morocco (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.0% from 2012-2021. Libya and Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Kenya, Namibia and Ethiopia increased by +13, +2.2, +2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Egypt ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 53% of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia, Libya, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Cameroon, Namibia and Tanzania, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +58.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
