Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, optical fiber cables exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. In 2022, Morocco (X tons) was the major exporter of optical fiber cables, committing 54% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (19%).

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the optical fiber cables exports, with a CAGR of +95.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tunisia (+18.2%) and South Africa (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In Morocco, optical fiber cables exports expanded at an average annual rate of +100.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+14.8% per year) and South Africa (+2.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X tons of optical fiber cables were imported in Africa; with a decrease of -27.8% on the year before. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, optical fiber cables imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importer of optical fiber cables in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 28% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Egypt (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical fiber cables imports into South Africa stood at +11.2%. At the same time, Nigeria (+31.7%), Egypt (+30.0%), Senegal (+21.6%), Tunisia (+13.6%), Morocco (+13.5%), Ethiopia (+10.6%), Botswana (+8.4%), Kenya (+2.6%) and Algeria (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012-2022. Tanzania and Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+11 p.p.), Egypt (+8.4 p.p.), Morocco (+5.2 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.2 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Algeria (-2 p.p.), Tanzania (-3.3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-17.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 30% of total imports. Egypt, Tanzania, Tunisia, Algeria, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Ethiopia, Botswana and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 59% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
