Optical Telescope Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African optical telescope market increased by 32% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after six years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a deep setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, exports of optical telescopes in Africa skyrocketed to X units, increasing by 79% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 106%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, optical telescope exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 551%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the four major exporters of optical telescopes, namely South Africa, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire and Niger, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X units) and Togo (X units), together making up a 12% share of total exports. Mali (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +2,611.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mali ($X) and Niger ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 76% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo, which together accounted for a further 9.9%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +1,341.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, falling by -30.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 11,161% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+52.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of optical telescopes increased by 177% to X units, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a precipitous decrease. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical telescope imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Algeria represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which resulted at 46% of total imports. Nigeria (X units) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uganda (8.1%). The following importers - South Africa (X units), Mali (X units) and Niger (X units) - each amounted to a 9.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +151.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical telescopes in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Uganda, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Algeria stood at +11.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+6.2% per year) and Uganda (+84.5% per year).
