From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 1,646%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up an 8.7% share of total exports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +114.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 6.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 52%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 54%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Libya represented the largest importer of orange juice (single strength) in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Equatorial Guinea (X tons), creating a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Gabon (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) - together made up 31% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to orange juice (single strength) imports into Libya stood at +11.6%. At the same time, Equatorial Guinea (+59.6%), Somalia (+43.9%), Mali (+40.7%), Gambia (+35.8%), Guinea (+22.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.5%), Cabo Verde (+15.6%), Ghana (+4.6%), Senegal (+2.6%) and Mozambique (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Equatorial Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +59.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gabon (-1.6%) and Algeria (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Libya (+15 p.p.), Equatorial Guinea (+13 p.p.), Mali (+3.3 p.p.), Gambia (+2.4 p.p.), Guinea (+2 p.p.) and Somalia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Gabon (-4.1 p.p.) and Algeria (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported orange juice (single strength) in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Equatorial Guinea ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Libya stood at +11.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Equatorial Guinea (+54.8% per year) and Senegal (+3.2% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline.
