The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, oxygen-function amino-compound imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sudan (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+3.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-2.5 p.p.) and Sudan (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 16%.

Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +11.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
