The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 276% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oxygen-function amino-compound exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Sudan represented the major exporter of oxygen-function amino-compounds in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 10% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sudan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oxygen-function amino-compounds exports, with a CAGR of +20.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+19.9%) and Egypt (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sudan totaled +10.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (+18.8% per year) and Egypt (+1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of oxygen-function amino-compounds in Africa skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 20% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, oxygen-function amino-compound imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 40% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together constituting a 40% share of total imports. Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+22.0%), Nigeria (+13.5%), Kenya (+7.5%), Algeria (+5.8%) and Egypt (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sudan (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+3.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+3.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-2.5 p.p.) and Sudan (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Nigeria, Sudan and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 16%.

Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +11.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
